Keloid steroid treatment: If you are someone who experiences ear keloids, you’ll know that it can be emotionally upsetting and embarrassing. At the London Keloid Scar Clinic, we offer a variety of clinically-proven, safe, effective and in 70% of cases, permanent removal of ear keloid scarring and depending on the size, shape and location of your scar, a course of simple steroid injections may be all that is required to remove your keloid scar and prevent further reoccurrence.
What is a steroid keloid treatment? Corticosteroid and chemotherapeutic injections
Keloid scar injections consist of a course of a specific combination of corticosteroids (Triamnicolone) and chemotherapeutic drug (5-fluorouracil (5-FU)) injections. They are particularly suitable for those who have keloid and hypertrophic scars but do not wish to have them removed, surgically.
For many years, a specific steroid called Triamnicolone Acetonide has been used to effectively treat keloids scars. This substance is the most specific for stopping the growth and flattening keloid lesions as well as hypertrophic and raised scarring. Triamnicolone Acetonide comes in various concentrations and they range from 10 to 40mg per ml.
The chemotherapeutic drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is a well-known treatment option reserved for recalcitrant hypertrophic scar and keloid lesions.
Your specialist keloid scar doctor will examine your scars and determine which is the most suitable concentration of the combination of these two medications for you, in a no obligation, initial consultation, prior to any keloid scar removal treatment being agreed.
What happens during a steroid and chemotherapeutic injection course for ear keloids at The London Keloid Scar Clinic, Harley Street?
Depending on what your doctor has recommended by means of treatment, you will most likely be advised to have a once monthly injection until the keloids are completely flat. After this course, you will be able to monitor whether your keloid scarring is returning or not. If that is the case, then you will need to have regular ‘top-ups’ to keep the scarring at bay. The risk of keloid reoccurring depends on several factors, including how severe the keloid is.
- You will have an initial medical examination and consultation (prior to booking your appointment for treatment)
- A topical or injectable anaesthetic may be applied to help reduce the discomfort of the steroid injection.
- The a specific combination of corticosteroids ( Triamnicolone ) and chemotherapeutic drug ( 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)) injection will then be administered in to the scar tissue.
- The treated areas will then be dressed with plasters. These will need to be kept on for at least one hour, following the treatment.
- A follow up appointment will be scheduled for a month after the treatment.
- You will be able to call us at any time between appointments if you have any questions or concerns.
What can I expect after my steroid and chemotherapeutic drug injection treatment for my ear keloid?
You may experience a little discomfort around the treatment areas for a day or so after your treatment. Some mild swelling of the scars, redness and tenderness is all entirely normal and not permanent.
The scar will then gradually flatten in the 4 weeks that follow your treatment. Maximum results are usually achieved with a course of 4 or 5 injections, but your individual treatment course will be laid out for you in your initial consultation.
How long do the results last?
In 70% of cases at The London Keloid Scar Clinic, the treatment is permanent. However, our keloid scar is as unique as you are and depending on its severity could come back after some time, following your initial treatment course.
If you do start to see the keloid reoccur, you will be able to have sporadic top up injections, to prevent it from re-appearing. We will ensure that we follow up on your treatment and keep in contact, so that if you do notice any change in your results, we can act fast and prevent reoccurrence.
