We understand that steroid injection alone is not as effective treatment for ear keloid nodules. Therefore, keloid removal is highly recommend. The main aim is to get rid of keloid tissue immediately as most keloid nodules do not flatten down easily with steroid injections alone. Either that or they may need a number of sessions of steroid injections which could take many years of monthly injections.

Step 1. Keloid removal

Pre-treatment instruction:

  • Wash your hair in the morning of the treatment days in order to avoid wet the the treating
    areas for minimum 48 hours.
  • Avoid taking blood thinning medication, food and supplements for two days prior the
    treatment includes alcohol, ibuprofen, Vitamin C, E, St Johns’s wort in order to help prevent
    risk of bleeding.
  • Ensure eating food normally before the treatment. This will help prevent risk of fainting during
    the treatment from low blood sugar.
  • Prepare time to spend at the clinic at least 2 hours.


The ear and around the area will be disinfected with antiseptic solution. Local anaesthetic injection will be administered to numb the areas. You may feel slightly discomfort during the injection. However, the anaesthetic will immediately numb the area and the numbness will last up to 4 hours. keloids we be removed by the specific shaving method that aim to remove all the keloid tissue or as much keloid possible yet preserve the natural shape of your ears. The specific electro surgical machine that the doctor use will shave the keloid while stop bleeding in the same time. Therefore, there will be very minimal bleeding and painless. Steroid injection: Immediately after the removal, the specific steroid for keloid will be injected in a certain debt of the wound. The antibiotic ointment will be applied and the wounds will be then covered with plaster.

Step 2. Preventative measures for keloid recurrence

Once you come back for a follow up appointment with the doctor at four weeks after your keloid removal, the doctor will examine the wounds and if they heal well, the doctor will start the keloid recurrent prevention.

A course of minimum 5 injection of steroid into the treated area at certain debt and technique every 2-4 weeks apart. The doctor will advise how often you will need the to come back for the injection.

Keloid pressure earrings will be provided. We recommend you to wear them all the time for a minimum of one year.

What is the steroid injection for keloid?

A specific steroid has been used for keloid treatment for many years. Triamnicolone Acetonide is the most specific steroid used to stop the growth and flatten keloid, hypertrophic and raised scar. There are different concentrations of Triamnicolone acetonide range from 10-40 mg/ ml which suitable to treat different type of the raised scars. Our doctor will examine your scars and select the best suitable concentration of Triamnicolone for you.

What is other option I can choose if I do not want keloid removal?

As the maximum result of an injection will be at one month after, we usually recommend to have the injection once a month until the keloids are completely flat. Then patients can observe if the keloid grow back or not. Top up injection may needed if the keloid grow back. The risk of keloid recurrent depends on many factors including the severity of the keloid itself.
