What Are Ear Keloids and What Causes Them?
Keloids occur when the body produces excessive collagen during the wound-healing process, leading to thickened, raised scars that extend beyond the original injury site.
Common Causes of Ear Keloids
Keloids frequently develop after ear piercings, particularly when there is irritation or infection.
Cuts, burns, or any damage to the ear can trigger keloid formation in predisposed individuals.
If a family member has keloids, your risk increases significantly.
People with darker skin tones are up to 15 times more likely to develop keloids compared to those with lighter skin.
At The London Keloid Clinic, we provide a comprehensive consultation and treatment approach. Our doctors carefully examine each case, considering factors such as keloid size, location, and patient preferences to recommend the most suitable treatment. With years of expertise and cutting-edge technology, we have achieved life-changing results for thousands of patients.

Treatment Options for Ear Keloids
We offer a range of highly effective, evidence-based treatments tailored to the specific needs of each patient, including:
LCC Signature Triple Therapy
A unique and comprehensive approach combining surgical keloid removal, intralesional steroid injections, Chemotherapy and custom pressure earrings. This method significantly reduces the risk of recurrence and promotes optimal healing.
Steroid Injection Therapy
A course of intralesional corticosteroid injections administered directly into the keloid tissue to reduce inflammation, soften the lesion, and help prevent regrowth.
Steroid and Chemotherapy Injection Therapy
An advanced protocol that combines corticosteroids with low-dose intralesional chemotherapy agents (such as 5-fluorouracil) to effectively suppress keloid activity, reduce volume, and minimise the chance of recurrence.
The LCC Signature Triple Therapy for Ear Keloid
Our most effective treatment, developed by Dr. Salinda Johnson, addresses keloids holistically by removing the excess tissue, treating the underlying scar with steroids, and applying pressure earrings to minimise recurrence.
Preparation Instructions:
- Wash your hair on the morning of your appointment to keep the area dry for 48 hours post-treatment.
- Avoid blood-thinning substances (e.g., alcohol, ibuprofen, supplements like Vitamin C or E, and St. John’s Wort) for two days before the procedure to reduce the risk of bleeding.
- Eat as normal before the treatment to maintain stable blood sugar levels.
- Plan for a 2-hour visit to ensure sufficient time for the procedure and aftercare instructions.
Procedure Overview:
- The area will be disinfected, and a local anaesthetic will be administered to numb the ear.
- Using a specialised electrosurgical device, the keloid will be carefully shaved to remove as much tissue as possible while preserving the natural ear shape.
- The device minimises bleeding, ensuring a virtually painless experience.
- A steroid injection is administered immediately after removal, and antibiotic ointment is applied. The wound is then dressed with a plaster.
Post-Treatment Care:
- A wound care kit and antibiotics are provided to reduce the risk of infection.
- A follow-up appointment is scheduled four weeks after the procedure.
- You’ll receive a direct emergency contact number, and our clinic nurse will check in with you within 1–2 days.
During your follow-up, the doctor will examine the wound and initiate the recurrence prevention plan if healing is satisfactory.
- Steroid Injections: A series of targeted local injections combining corticosteroids and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), spaced 2–4 weeks apart, to suppress keloid activity and prevent regrowth.
- Steroid and 5-FU Injection Therapy
A series of targeted local injections combining corticosteroids and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), spaced 2–4 weeks apart, to suppress keloid activity and prevent regrowth.
